Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lake Charles District Curriculum

Reading and understanding is the foundation for all learning. Reading different types of books, articles, graphics and digital works are skills that students need now and in the adult world. Writing goes hand -in-hand with reading, and communicates what has been learned, as well as providing the reader with information. It is important for student writers to know and understand their readers as they write to inform and write to learn. Students develop a range of analytic and critical thinking strategies through these studies.

Teaching each child how to work with numbers, measurement, geometry, algebra, probability and statistics is a goal that is held from lower elementary schools through high school. Although computation skills are vital, a strong focus is on problem-solving and writing to explain mathematic thought. It is important the students learn how to work independently as well as in teams to identify mathematical problems and use creativity to find solutions to math problems.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College

It is not too early to begin thinking about college when your child is still in middle school! Talk with your child about career choices he or she may find interesting! Many schools offer “career days” and field trips to inform students about possible choices. Work with your child’s school counselor about courses your child may need to take in order to be college or career ready by the end of high school. Find out if your child’s high school offers Dual Enrollment options. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to earn college credits and high school credit at the same time. After high school graduation, these college credits may allow your child to need fewer credits for college graduation.
