Prince William County Public Schools is responsible for educating students in preschool through the twelfth grade in Lake Ridge. As a countywide school system with 86,000 students and 94 campuses, the district is quite large. This means that students have access to far more academic, extracurricular, and supportive programs than children that attend school in a smaller district. Students are able to explore their particular areas of interest, while also having the individualized attention they need to work on areas of weakness. Prince William County offers a number of specialized programs, including a global school, a world languages institute, and all-day kindergarten classes at each elementary school.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lake Ridge District Curriculum

The math curriculum helps students the ability to do advanced work before they graduate high school. Early learning introduces concepts in geometry and algebra. Students learn the relational properties in math, and topics such as linear correlations are explored. Students learn how to calculate a correlation coefficient, and explain how it measures association between two variables. Advanced topics such as least squares regression are also covered. Students use the regression to determine the equation of a line.

Lake Ridge’s middle and high school students take part in a fine arts curriculum that includes the theatre arts. In middle school, students learn about the necessities of preparing for a performance, from vocal warm ups to costume checks to memorizing lines. Technical aspects of theatre production are introduced as well, with students exploring the various aspects of developing an appropriate set with lighting, special effects, costuming, and the like. Chalk Talk: Benefits of Career-Tech Classes

Career-tech courses have long been a major part of public education. However, the economy has shifted toward more technical occupations in recent years, making career-tech courses that much more appealing. Students in these courses derive many benefits. First, they can explore a career area while getting on-the-job training. For example, students that want to be a welder can get into a shop and learn how to weld, gaining valuable experience. Second, because students are engaged in hands-on learning it is much more engaging and interesting. Students are performing tasks while doing something they enjoy, so the knowledge and skills associated with those tasks are much more easily mastered. Lastly, career-tech courses put students on a fast track to success. Many technical jobs, such as those in the medical services and technology sectors, require just an associate’s degree or a certification. Students can begin working towards fulfilling those credentials while taking career-tech courses in high school.
