Chalk Talk: Thank-You Notes

Nothing makes a teacher feel more unappreciated than never receiving a Thank-You note from a student for whom s/he wrote a recommendation. It’s just good manners. But even more important for a student, Thank-You notes can be very useful. After meeting with an admissions representative, for example, a simple Thank-You note can really cement the burgeoning opinion the representative has of the student. Thank-You notes shouldn’t be overly elaborate; even an email composed of just a couple sentences can do the trick, though for recommenders, it should really be a hand-written note. In fact, a Thank-You note to a college representative shouldn’t be overly long because they are already overburdened with work and don’t have a lot of time to read a long letter. A Thank-You note makes a student appear conscientious, attentive, polite, mature, and self-possessed. A simple note can accomplish so much!
