Lakeland District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students attending the Lakeland School System are ensured an education that meets the academic standards of the Tennessee Department of Education. The standards provide the expectations that students should meet each year in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Language and other elective subjects. Each teacher is able to decide how best to instruct their students in the skills and knowledge that they are expected to learn at the grade level and districts are able to incorporate other learning opportunities such as dual credit enrollment that accelerates the pace of learning for students.

We currently cover the following Lakeland-area school district: Lakeland School System.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakeland District Curriculum

The English curriculum at Lakeland School System helps students develop a mastery of the English language and how it is used effectively. The students learn about the application of grammar skills and acquire vocabulary skills in their writing, speaking, vocabulary, research and studying. They also discover an appreciation and interpretation of literature through a variety of genre. Informational texts are also read so that students learn how to analyze non-fiction and how to recognize an author's intent.

Biology is one topic of study of the science curriculum. At Lakeland Schools, this is primarily a laboratory course. During this instruction the students learn about cell biology, photosynthesis, protein synthesis and other cellular processes. Their instruction includes laboratory and hands-on time and a use of scientific literature. They learn how to develop scientific hypotheses, then test and observe them, and then report on their scientific findings. These steps help students develop strong scientific literacy skills.

Chalk Talk: Encouraging Readers

When children show an interest in books or reading, one of the best things a parent or sibling can do is to help them develop this interest. The first thing to do is to touch base with the child's teacher so an understanding can be made as to how he or she approaches instruction. Also, see what is recommended to help benefit the child's reading. Next, set up a time every day when the entire family spends time reading. During this time, the child can spend the time reading with an adult. Encourage the child to use the pictures to help understand the meaning on the reading. With these hints, the child and the parent may both show an increased interest in reading.
