Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lansing District Curriculum

The curriculum encourages an atmosphere that stimulates self-awareness and an intrinsic motivation for self-improvement, a meaningful value system, a dedicated work ethic, a responsibility for their learning, a respect for themselves and for others, and a direction that assists them in becoming responsible members of society.

The curriculum follows the Illinois Common Core Standards, which are based on international standards in order to facilitate student’s entry into post-secondary education and the workforce while competing on a global level. The standards ensure equal opportunities for education regardless of location or learning style. The curriculum focuses on critical thinking and research skills as well as key concepts in mathematics and science. The curriculum attempts to apply these concepts to real-world situations as frequently as possible. Because of the ever-growing focus on global issues, students must be able to compete on a global level.

Chalk Talk: Bridge Programs

Different students come into their own at different times, and sometimes this doesn’t happen until after a student has had a rough year or two in high school. Sometimes, students may have a learning difference that isn’t recognized until farther along in the student’s academic career. Even though the student might then work hard for junior and senior year, those first two weaker years might really seem to hold the student back from even getting into college. Bridge Programs are a great way to help students overcome these challenges. Bridge Programs typically admit students on a probationary status in the summer. Students might take a summer class and then mainstream in the fall, or students may continue with the Bridge Program throughout the first term. Not every college offers a Bridge Program, but those that do report very strong graduation rates among participants—much higher than non-participants.
