Chalk Talk: Single-Gender Classrooms

Several years ago, single-gender learning environments were commonplace. However, due to concerns about gender equality, these schools and classrooms were integrated to coed environments in order to allow members of both genders equal academic and extracurricular activities. Now, though, a shift toward single-gender learning environments has begun, of course allowing for equality for both genders. But, what are the benefits? First, it is established that boys and girls generally learn at different rates. They also tend to have different attention spans. This may be, in part, because, on average, the female brain develops faster than the male brain. Males also tend to approach reasoning and problem-solving in a different way from females. With boys, it’s more effective to begin with the abstract and then moved to the concrete. With girls, it is best begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. Separating classes according to gender may simply be a way of customizing education to accommodate learning styles in the best possible way.
