Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Las Cruces District Curriculum

The curriculum focuses on English Language Arts and Mathematics with the goal of achieving fluency in both subjects. In English and Language Arts students learn to read and write and to demonstrate their abilities in the English language both orally and in written form. Critical analysis skills are developed through reading for evidence and content in both informational text and literature and being able to relate the reading material to one’s life and to other learned material.

In Mathematics students focus on a limited number of subjects including computational skills, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics which are studied both intensely and progressively through the grades. A deep understanding of core mathematical skills allows students to apply what they have learned to real life situations and in understanding higher math. Among the goals of the curriculum is for students to be able to determine the most precise method to solve mathematic problems.

Chalk Talk: Visit the Victorian Time

Young people have the opportunity to see what life in the 1800’s was like at the Geffrye Museum website. The Geffrye Museum which is located in London, England is dedicated to preserving the history of the middle class during the last 400 years. The Museum website provides a game for kids that asks them for help in finding the missing family dog for a Victorian family. As kids explore through a Victorian home, they learn about how a middle class family lived their life in the 1870’s, about who would live in the home including the servants and what the items in each room would be used for.
