Chalk Talk: Learning Expectations in the Arts Curriculum

Through their art classes, students are introduced to fine arts, performance arts, and have many opportunities to learn and perform music. These are valuable classes because they support creative and other types of thinking, but they also provide students with a background in the arts that they can draw upon throughout life. For instance, the cultural context in which various musical forms are created is studied as well. Basic musical notation is introduced, with students gaining the ability to read, write, and perform eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes. Additionally, the process of giving and receiving feedback is considered as well. Students offer critiques of major artworks, analyzing the artist’s viewpoints, intentions, and messages displayed in their work.
