Leicester District and Curriculum

The Leicester Public Schools curriculum mission is to provide an educational environment that fosters inquiry, problem solving, the application of knowledge and skills gained, and high levels of student achievement. The curriculum aligns both horizontally across grade levels and content areas as well as vertically from grade to grade. The curriculum team’s focus for the school year is the math curriculum as well as a common format that brings uniformity to the curriculum maps. The changes to the math curriculum will increase the opportunities for students to apply their learning so they understand the ways that math is used.

We currently cover the following Leicester-area school district: Leicester Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Leicester District Curriculum

The high school’s curriculum prepares students for the future by challenging students in a safe learning environment, teaching and requiring the use of higher-order thinking skills, providing opportunities for learning outside the classroom, and celebrating diversity. For example, the curriculum map for accounting contains a table with standards, unit mastery objectives, content that is taught and learned, the skills students are expected to acquire, and the assessments. In English, the map lays out the ways in which reading, writing, speaking and listening, and conducting research will intertwine.

The curricular information for A.P. Environmental Science reads more like a syllabus, with course prerequisites, a course overview, a unit planner, and an overview of assignments. The Science curriculum also has the goal of teaching students the steps of the scientific process. The goal is for all course descriptions follow one format that adheres to the objectives and provides the plan for how students will arrive at understanding of the learning goal. The curriculum team is looking to present all of the curriculum maps in a consistent format.

Chalk Talk: How to Choose an Education Program

High school students going to college and deciding to pursue education can examine a variety of factors when choosing a program to attend. Aside from looking at aspects of colleges themselves, they should investigate what the education programs have to offer. One factor is the length of the program. Although most universities offer four-year education programs that provide Bachelor's degrees, some universities may require education majors to complete a fifth year and earn a Master's in addition to their undergraduate degree. Prospective students can look at success rates of education programs in terms of how many students went on to receive teaching jobs--an important factor considering such jobs may be sparse in areas of the country. Some colleges may specialize in and be well-known for particular areas of education. Finally, students can always look at program philosophies and course tracks and descriptions when making their decision.
