Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Little Falls District Curriculum

In elementary math, students develop problem-solving skills in numeric operations, algebraic patterning, geometry and measurement, and ratios and proportions. They acquire the skills needed to effectively use rulers and other measuring devices. Middle school math students examine decimals and fractions as well, and gain the ability to multiply and divide them using standard algorithms. Later, they learn how to construct and use models to find answers to more complex problems that require them to do multi-step problem-solving in algebra, geometry, and data analysis.

The science curriculum is designed to introduce students to scientific knowledge, scientific literacy, and the ability to perform investigations using the scientific method. Students learn how to formulate hypotheses and then to design experiments to test their validity of their theories. They are expected to use scientific notation and to be able to compile lab notes and discuss their scientific discoveries. In high school, students can take on advanced topics in biology, environmental science, chemistry, and physics.

Chalk Talk: Afterschool Programs Give Students a Leg Up

Many public school districts provide afterschool learning programs for their students. These programs run the gamut from mentoring activities with adults or older students to homework time to play time. The totality of such programs provides students with a host of benefits. Students that regularly participate in afterschool programming have higher grades and test scores. Likewise, kids that take part in these programs show an increase in social skills and improved work habits. There are behavioral benefits as well. Students in afterschool programs have fewer discipline referrals than their peers. As such, afterschool programs are far more than a place for kids to go until their parents are off work.
