Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lock Haven District Curriculum

In Language Arts, students are expected to meet objectives for reading independently by being able to choose books at their grade level, read them fluently, and understand its meaning. Emphasis on literal and figurative vocabulary is placed so that students development the ability to discern tone and voice in what they read. They should be able to synthesize and analyze meaning from both fiction and nonfiction. Writing using a process that involves brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising and publishing also rely on these thinking skills.

In high school, foundations that are developed in middle and high school are continued as preparation for college and career. Students have a full program that includes 4 years of English and Social Studies, as well as combined programs in Science and Math. Students are also required to present a service-learning culmination project to graduate. Critical thinking skills, strong communication and effective presentation skills are a part of what the curriculum aims to inspire for all students.

Chalk Talk: Ways to Support Your Child's Unique Interests

Maybe your student is a talented musician, dancer, athlete, artist, or writer, with many opportunities to perform in front of others. Maybe they are good at caring for people, plants, or animals, skilled in business, and know exactly what they want to do when they grow up. Every student has their special way that they shine, and can share with others. As your child develops, look for extracurrculars or enrichment programs that will support these goals. Also, think about logical connections to other activities that might be of interest to your child. They certainly don’t have to commit for life to these as hobbies, but the introduction lays a useful foundation for future learning.
