Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lockport District Curriculum

The curriculum is based on the Illinois Common Core Standards for math and English language arts and the Next Generation Science Standards. In English language, history, and humanities classes, students learn research and analytical skills while reading complex, nonfiction texts. Students also develop grammatical and vocabulary skills. These skills are also drawn upon in the writing curriculum which calls upon students to write in a variety of formats.

In mathematics and science classes, students work on fundamental concepts, covering them thoroughly to ensure that students have mastered the material they need before moving on to more challenging topics in high school. The curriculum focuses on real-world applications whenever possible. Students are also encouraged to become involved in extra-curricular activities such as sports and community service in order to broaden their experiences.

Chalk Talk: Thank-You Notes

It might seem old fashioned, but Thank-You Notes can be a real help for applicants. Thank-You Notes are thoughtful and conscientious, and they also show that the student is interested in a particular college. They give a college representative a positive impression of an applicant. Whenever a student visits a college campus or meets with a representative, s/he should send a Thank-You Note. It doesn’t have to say much; it can be an email simply saying thank you. Actually, it shouldn’t be very long. Remember that college representatives have a lot of mail and emails to read, and you don’t want to turn something that’s supposed to be simple and positive into a hassle. Thank-You Notes are also a good way to establish a relationship, or further a relationship, with a specific representative. If the applicant has questions about a college, s/he can now easily and confidently email the representative, having established a good relationship with them.
