Chalk Talk: Building Critical Thinkers

Children have a natural curiosity about the world and the way things work. While parents naturally want to encourage that curiosity, it can be frustrating and tiring to find answers to the never-ending Why? Children need to ask questions to gain a sense of control over his or her world. But just because they ask does not mean you have to answer. They also need to learn ways to seek out answers for themselves. Instead, acknowledge the question, which will reinforce your child’s self-worth and stimulate their inquiry. Then, find a way to challenge their inquisitive nature to the right sources of information. Join them in the investigate process by seeking out sources in newspapers, magazines, or the internet. When you become excited to find the answer with them, they will feel validated and loved. And you just might learn something in the process!
