Lopatcong District and Curriculum

Lopatcong Township School District serves approximately 870 students from grades PK-8. The district has a partnership with the Phillipsburg district, and once students reach ninth grade, they go on to attend Phillipsburg High School, which serves students in various additional townships as well. Both schools follow the New Jersey Core Content Standards which provide comprehensive learning objectives for all subjects. The learning objectives are organized according to topics within each subject, such as algebra and geometry in Math, and are provided as grade-level expectations for students to achieve.

We currently cover the following Lopatcong-area school districts: Lopatcong Township School District and Phillipsburg School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lopatcong District Curriculum

Phillipsburg High School has developed curriculum guides for each course in the school. Each of these curriculum guides features a general description of the course, the overarching essential questions that drive the course, the core activities students will be engaged in throughout the year, and the various assessments that will be used. For example, for English I, which is taken by ninth grade students, an example of an essential question is “What can we learn from stories about human nature?”

Examples of core activities, which are general in nature, are students reading various texts, prose, poetry, and drama for comprehension and fluency; students presenting information to the class through discussions and oral presentations; and students writing for various purposes and audiences. There are many assessments used, including journals, reading logs, portfolios, formal tests and quizzes, open-ended question responses, self-assessment, conferencing, and performance activities.

  • Phillipsburg High Takes New Approach to Literacy - Phillipsburg High teacher Faith Rancoroni took four years to get her Making Comics course developed and approved by the district, and in 2015, it finally became an elective course offered to students. The goal is to use a medium that may be more familiar and popular with students to teach essential literacy concepts, and the benefits of using comics include that they work for students of all ability levels, the combination of text and images helps students who struggle with vocabulary and context, and they help motivate reluctant readers and engage students in literacy.
  • Navy Veteran Speaks to Students About His Love for Writing - When Phillipsburg native and Navy veteran Mark Piggott visited a Phillipsburg High English class, he told them that when he kept having recurring dreams about being alone on an island, he knew he had to write his first fantasy novel. He knew it was meant to be when he stopped having the dreams after he finished the novel, which took nearly four years to research, write, and edit and was driven by character dialogue.
  • PHS Hosts Workshop for Juniors and Seniors Planning to Attend College - The Phillipsburg High Guidance Department—with visitors from the admissions staffs from two local universities—held a highly successful two-day workshop for juniors and seniors who were panning to attend college. Chalk Talk: Choosing a Tutor

Tutors are typically solicited when students need extra help in certain academic areas, so it is important for parents to refrain from choosing a tutor lightly. Parents should look into the experiences and resumes of tutors and possibly interview them as well. It is of course beneficial to hire a tutor who has some experience and expertise with the specific content area and age range of the child. One place to look at is a major tutoring center, such as Huntington Learning Center, Sylvan Learning, etc. The greatest benefit of these centers is they typically only hire highly qualified professionals who are very well-trained. Some drawbacks, however, are that these centers can be very expensive and that, although they cater to students of different ages with various academic needs, they sometimes place the greatest emphasis on standardized test (e.g.: SAT) tutoring but not as much on working with very young children. If finances are an issue, parents may want to look at hiring independent tutors, who usually are paid at lower rates.
