Chalk Talk: Foreign Language Study

When students have trouble mastering their own language – English – it seems like a waste of energy to force them to study foreign languages. It is easy to overlook, however, the benefits of studying a foreign language. When students have to go back to the simplest of sentences, they come to understand the rules of grammar more clearly. After mastering the concepts of tense and sentence structure, they may be able to apply this new-found understanding to their own language. Romance languages such as Spanish, French, and Italian share many root words in common with the English language. In expanding their foreign vocabulary, students will expand their English vocabulary, and will be better able to determine word meanings through context.
