Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Louisville District Curriculum

The high school world languages curriculum in Louisville prepares students for advanced levels of communication in a second language. Studies take place on three levels: interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive. On the interpersonal level, students work on their speaking and listening skills by interacting with other students in conversations that range from basic and brief to extremely complex. Students develop a knack for using appropriate utterances, understanding novel utterances from others, and utilizing socially-appropriate gestures and nonverbal communication.

Louisville’s technology curriculum helps students develop an understanding of how technology develops and how it impacts our daily lives. Learners explore the nature of technology and identify how it develops in order to fulfill human needs or desires. Students look at computers, the Internet, mobile phones, and other modern technologies, and explain the benefits and detriments of each. Responsible use of technology is also a main area of emphasis. Students learn about digital ethics with regard to a number of topics, including digital copyrights and appropriate use of online tools like social media.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Physical Education

Many students will name gym as their favorite subject, which isn't surprising because they get to run around and play games and sports. However, physical education is about more than just fun and games. Gym needs to be about teaching students sportsmanship and teamwork. As always, students should be expected to treat others with respect. Students also need to learn that winning and being the best aren't always the most important things but that trying their best is most important, just as it is the in the other content areas. This is an important lesson for both athletic and non-athletic children. Gym class also tests students' ability to listen through following the rules. Gym teachers are required to write lesson plans--just as all teachers are--and may have to create connections between their classes and standardized assessments or standards.
