Chalk Talk: Value of Reading Each Day

Children who read each day reap a number of long-term benefits that non-readers miss out on. Children that read have improved vocabularies and an expanded understanding of the rules of language. In addition to better spelling and grammar, kids gain an appreciation for proper sentence structure, word choice, and syntax. Because reading requires attention, students who read often have an improved ability to concentrate. This translates into better performance on academic tasks, from in-class assignments to completing homework in a timely fashion. Reading also teaches kids about the world around them. Children can investigate peoples and places far across the globe. This exposure to other ways of thinking and living also helps kids develop empathy and respect for others.
