Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Madeira District Curriculum

Helping students acquire the skills related to reading informational texts is a central purpose of the elementary school English language arts curriculum in Madeira. Students develop an understanding of how to pull key ideas and details from a text by learning how to ask pertinent questions, survey multiple sources, and make connections between various people and events. Learners also gain insight into the craft and structure of informational texts by examining text features including captions, subheadings, glossaries, and the like. Students work on integrating knowledge from their readings as well. Students use photos and illustrations in a text to determine the purpose of the passage, and review how two authors might view the same event in two completely different manners.

The physical education curriculum in Madeira focuses on helping students develop skills that will improve their overall health and wellness. Students learn how to maintain a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, and healthy choices. Learners explore various aspects of a healthy diet, including identifying the foods they currently eat that are not good for them.

Chalk Talk: Teenagers and School

Teenagers often roll their eyes and think they are "too cool for school," but it is important for parents to keep tabs on their teens' education, while also holding them accountable and responsible. Although teens will never admit it, they want their parents to care about how they are doing in school, and research has shown that teens who have involved parents academically outperform those who do not. Although parents of teens should not go through their folders and make sure they are completing every homework assignment, they should hold their teen responsible and provide consequences if they find out homework is not getting done or grades are slipping. Parents should also hold their teens responsible for being prepared to go to school, as there will be no hand-holding once they move on to college.
