Chalk Talk: Considering a Gap Year

Many students dive right into a job, career training, college, or the military upon their graduation from high school. However, there is something to be said for considering a “gap year” after high school. The gap year is a staple of education in other western countries, namely the United Kingdom and Australia, but it’s only just begun to find support in the U.S. The idea of the gap year is to give students much-needed down time before beginning the next stage of their life. After attending school from kindergarten to the twelfth grade, students could usually stand some time away from schooling. But that doesn’t mean that a gap year is a yearlong summer break. Instead, students can use the time to travel and see the world, learn about their surroundings, and experience cultures unlike their own, or take that time to do an internship to get valuable on-the-job training.
