Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Manchester Township District Curriculum

The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards outline specific learning targets for students at each grade level from pre-Kindergarten through the 12th grade. The intent of these standards is to ensure that all students in New Jersey acquire the same knowledge and skills regardless of the school they attend. Math and Language Arts are governed separately by the Common Core Standards Initiative, a nationwide set of guidelines that provide a clear understating of what students should learn.

Since community involvement is so important, particular emphasis is placed on the 21st Century life and careers content area. The mission of this set of standards is to prepare students for living and working in our dynamic global society. Starting early, students acquire skills they will need to achieve this mission by participating in activities that foster social and emotional development. Once in elementary school, students learn basic life skills, financial literacy skills, and are introduced to various career clusters.

Chalk Talk: Why Career Education Is Important

With the cost of college rapidly rising and shortages of workers in many career fields, ensuring that students have a good foundation in career education is increasingly important. Schools across the nation have begun career education programs that start as early as elementary school to ensure that by the time kids get to high school, they have a better idea of what they want to be when they grow up. If students can take aptitude and career-readiness exams early on, they can tailor the classes they take in high school to those particular career areas and aptitudes. Having this preparedness in high school means that when students enter college or trade school, they do so with a number of college credits and with the knowledge of what they want to do for a career. They will spend less time and money on post-secondary education, enter the workforce sooner and begin to make good wages sooner.
