Chalk Talk: 3 Essential Keys to a Created a Productive Workspace

Encouraging your child’s homework habits can be as simple as creating a kid-friendly workspace that is both functional and attractive to the eye. The U.S. Department of Education recommends that a homework space has bright light, ready-to-grab supplies, and a relative amount of quiet. To achieve the first goal, make sure the lighting is at or slightly above eye level. Use desk lamps or overhead lighting, and make sure to limit glare on computer screens to avoid eye strain. For supplies, use a shoebox or colored boxes to keep things like markers, colored pencils, or highlighters handy. You can get more creative and use color-coded mason jars or Starbucks cups with labels. Invite your son or daughter to put his own flair into the mix. To achieve the optimum noise level, pay attention to the needs of your child. If he’s more comfortable working with people around, keep the space in an open area like the dining room. But if you find he is easy distracted, use a table in a bedroom or kitchen to avoid the extra noise.
