Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Manteno District Curriculum

The curriculum follows the strands established in the Illinois Common Core Standards, which are intended to provide a quality education for all students, regardless of location, learning style, or any other differences. Students are given clear expectations for the knowledge they should acquire by the end of each class. In mathematics classes, students study fewer topics but spend more time exploring them so that they gain a more profound understanding of mathematical concepts. This gives students a strong foundation in mathematics which they can build on later with more complex concepts.

Science classes focus on real world problems, beginning with a study of the physical world and progressing to more complex engineering problems. Literacy skills are developed in both fiction and non-fiction so that students have the comprehension and analytic abilities to understand all types of texts. They also learn how to communicate their thoughts in a variety of writing and verbal communication styles. Students learn problem solving skills which will serve them after graduation, whether they pursue post-secondary education or directly enter the workforce.

Chalk Talk: Early Decision

Early Decision (ED) are early, binding college applications. They are binding in that students must sign a contract stating that they will attend this college if accepted. This can be a troubling idea, and students definitely shouldn’t apply if they aren’t sure this particular college is the one for them. Many things can happen to make this a difficult decision; for example, another college might offer a better financial aid package, but the student will be locked in to applying to this college they applied ED to. They might petition for a financial aid review, but that’s not a sure thing. But applying ED does have benefits, which is why so many students do it. Colleges tend to favor ED applicants heavily, and a large percentage of incoming classes are accepted Early Decision.
