Chalk Talk: Be a Better Writer: Avoid These Phrases

Whether you’re composing an answer to a test question or writing an essay for college admission, there are a few phrases that you should never use. First, avoid the phrase, “since the beginning of time.” In addition to being incredibly vague, this is a claim that is extremely difficult to prove. Unless you’ve lived through all of human history, don’t use it. Second, never begin a writing assignment by saying, “my paper is going to be about…” It is redundant and completely uninformative. Just write what about it – there’s no need to inform the reader that you will be writing about it later on in the paper. Lastly, don’t include the phrase, “in my opinion” in your writings. Not only is it a timid way of presenting your opinion, it also states the obvious. Essays are vehicles by which you present your opinions and point-of-view, so there’s no need to preface that fact with a useless phrase.
