Chalk Talk: Choosing a College Major

Choosing one’s area of study in college is a breeze for some students, while others struggle to identify the career path they wish to take. While it is nice to be able to enter college as a freshman with a major already selected, it is not a prerequisite. For students that aren’t sure what they want to study, taking a semester or two to explore various options might help make the decision easier. This gives students the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes and determine what does and does not interest them. Asking questions of peers, classmates, and professors may also help students determine what major best fits their aptitudes and interests. If further assistance is needed, many colleges and universities have counseling centers where students can take interest inventories. Data from these tests can inform a student about their strengths, weaknesses, and vocational-related interests.
