Chalk Talk: Why Kids Need Sports

Some parents view participation in sports as an extra activity, one that isn’t necessary for their child’s overall development. However, this could not be further from the truth. Sports offer children a host of benefits, both in and out of the classroom. Children that play sports learn valuable lessons in setting goals, hard work, and working as part of a team. Kids that play team sports also learn how to communicate effectively with diverse people. Sports teaches kids to overcome diversity as well, and continue working towards a goal even when there are obstacles in the way. These personal skills translate into a greater degree of success in the classroom. Students that play sports often have improved time management skills and perform better on classroom assessments. Athletes often hand in homework on a more regular basis as well. Student-athletes also get a boost in self-esteem from the improvement they experience in their skills and their performance both on the field and in the classroom.
