Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Martinsburg District Curriculum

Berkeley County Schools has consistency in its curriculum across schools. Literacy and math units are very well planned out and vertically aligned. Even if your students has to change from one school to another, they will probably still be reading the same book and studying the same math concepts. The skills from these core courses are taught so as to emphasize their interrelatedness with other subject area learning. This consistency ensures that the content is well prepared and presented and students are expected yearly to meet meaningful, targeted standards for learning in each subject area.

When it comes to adults, Berkeley County Schools provides programming both through adult education and partnerships with businesses. The business partnerships are especially strong, allowing students the opportunity to pair with business people as mentors. Teachers can earn grants from the businesses. All in all, it is a beneficial partnership from which both sides benefit.

Chalk Talk: Investing in Teachers

Berkeley County Schools invests in its teachers and their professional development ultimately benefits their students. It also benefits the quality of work that the teachers do every day, as it would not be possible for the number of that came out of Berkeley to exist were it not from superior teacher supports. This, in turn, supports students and gives them increased opportunities for high quality learning. By providing teachers the space and time that they need, students then also receive the services they need. Existing classroom initiatives can be models throughout the district and other schools in the area and also can be built upon so that there are more innovative learning opportunities for students. While monies could be allocated to curriculum or outside consultants, Berkeley has invested in its core resource and its teachers.
