Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Maryville District Curriculum

Maryville R-II School District utilizes the Missouri Learning Standards as a basis for its curriculum, but teachers are encouraged to tailor their lessons to fit the individual needs of their students. Critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical writing skills are stressed. Comprehensive literacy and effective research, presentation, and communication skills are also taught across all academic disciplines.

Students should be adaptable since they are going to be part of our ever-growing and changing global community. The skills and knowledge taught in this curriculum are intended to to prepare students for life outside the classroom. Students who take personal responsibility for their learning and who have opportunities to conduct original research projects will become life-long learners who are more often engaged and active in their community and who tend to have success in their post-secondary pursuits.

Chalk Talk: Public vs Private Colleges

What’s the difference? Public colleges are funded by the state, which means certain things. Their curriculum is reviewed by the state and may be subject to change because of this. They are required to admit a certain percentage of in-state students, which can mean they are easier to get into for in-state students. They tend to be larger than private colleges, though plenty of them are also small. They also tend to be organized into universities, which means that each department is grouped according to their focus into somewhat autonomous bodies. So there might be a school of law or a college of engineering within a university. Many private schools are also structured as universities, though. Often, this has to do with size, but not always. Private colleges are usually tuition funded, which means they pay a little more attention to the customer, i.e. the student. Unfortunately, most private colleges are significantly more expensive than state schools, though there are exceptions, and a competitive student may be offered scholarships and grants to make up the difference.
