Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Massillon District Curriculum

Stark country offers opportunities for teachers and students to develop leadership and mentoring skills to help others succeed in their goals through a collaborative process. Besides the common core subjects, the Arts play a very critical role in the learning process. Teachers always strive to improve the curriculum in drama, dance music, art so that they enhance student learning and creativity and align the curriculum with today's trends and global issues that permeate our world.

The high school curriculum seeks to teach the common core subjects while integrating an emphasis of Drama in theatrical production to encourage multi-faceted learning opportunities and diverse means of self-expression and creativity. Science research and Science fairs are an important part of the curriculum where students receive in-depth training in research and presentation skills under teachers' direction.

Chalk Talk: Being Able to Perform Mental Math

Many baby boomers were raised with a habit of learning to add, multiply , subtract and divide in their heads without much effort. That is because they were raised in a non-computer age and became acquainted with computers most likely in their late 40s or 50s or not at all until their retirement years! Generation Xer's knew computers from eighth grade and Generation Y's from Kindergarten but something is not being taught and that is manual math. We are so quick on the computer and can do any operation but what happens when we are forced to do complex operations in our heads without a calculator. Many of us overestimate the value of manual math in learning to calculate and budget weekly expenses, calculate mortgage payments, ensure we receive the right change. The value of doing simple math in your head can make one appear logical, sharp and focused.
