Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Matteson District Curriculum

The goal is for students to become invested in their own learning and experience, which benefits everyone. District strives to provide and maintain high-quality facilities and an infrastructure that supports a safe and nurturing learning environment. They are increasingly enriching the classroom experience with emerging learning technologies so that students have broad access to information as well as devices upon which to create presentations and projects.

In high school, students are offered a wider array of learning opportunities through the electives and career-oriented courses. College and career preparation are emphasized, in particular skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and communication are taught in all classes. Furthermore, the district values service and encourages students to give back to their community in the hopes that this will encourage them to continue performing community service in the future.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Breakfast

High school students are in such a rush all the time, and the time and effort needed to devote to a nutritious breakfast came seem too valuable to waste sitting and eating, but research has shown that a nutritious breakfast has lasting benefits. It doesn’t have to be anything too elaborate; a bowl of cereal or some toast and peanut butter can be enough to ‘wake up’ a student’s metabolism in the morning. On test days, before presentations, and even just on regular class days, research has shown that students perform much better when they have a balanced breakfast. This is especially important considering the fact that many high school students have incurred a sleep debt by spending long hours studying…or doing other things. Students who haven’t had a nutritious breakfast are easily distracted, fidgety, and generally perform worse than those who have.
