Mayville School District is a small, rural, community-focused district that provides educational programming to children from preschool through high school. Each of the district’s three buildings offer students stimulating learning environments in which they actively participate in engaging, yet challenging learning activities. Students at all grade levels are expected to attain high standards of academic and behavioral excellence. This standard is achieved through the hard work and dedication of students, teachers, staff members, and families who work together to achieve a common goal. With the support of local families, businesses, and other stakeholders, Mayville seeks to continue its mission to promote the social, emotional, and academic growth of all students such that they are prepared to meet the challenges of life and work head on.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mayville District Curriculum

Mayville’s high school social studies curriculum leads students on an exploration of historical events. Learners develop an understanding of how one’s cultural, economic, religious, and social background can determine how one views a history. Various primary and secondary sources are evaluated to get a clearer picture of history from multiple perspectives. To become better consumers of information, learners analyze different resources for their validity, and note why a resource is reliable or not. History is also explored in the context of science, technology, urbanization, religion, and other change-making themes. These changes are explored on a local, state, national, and global scale.

Students in Mayville have the opportunity to study theatre production as part of the district’s theatre arts curriculum. In middle school, students acquire the ability to perform plays based on the instructions of the director. Students also become adept at improvising when needed. Appropriate stage presence is a skill students acquire as well. Learners develop the ability to project their voice, move about the stage fluidly, and make eye contact with other actors and the audience. Theatre students also explore behind-the-scenes topics.

Chalk Talk: Why the Arts Are Important

Art courses give students of all ages the opportunity to explore their own creativity while examining the creativity of others. Art offers insights into the cultural traditions from areas around the world. This promotes understanding of varying viewpoints and can facilitate a better school climate. The arts also help students perform better in other subjects. Research shows that students who participate in art show gains in several core subject areas, including math and English. Critical thinking skills also result from participation in the arts. Young artists develop the ability to think outside the box, compare possible outcomes, evaluate possibilities, and analyze information. These skills are important for success in academics and in life in general.
