Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mendota Heights District Curriculum

The science curriculum introduces students to both content knowledge in scientific topics as well as the process of discovery that scientists undergo. Students learn about arriving at hypotheses, and then learn how to test their ideas through experimentation. They learn how to design experiments, take accurate lab notes, and how to present their scientific findings. Learners likewise gain the ability to develop conclusions based on their research that lead to a greater understanding of the subject under study.

An important part of the English language arts curriculum is the writing strand which emphasizes both creative and analytic types of writing. Supporting opinions with evidence is an additional skill students acquire. Learners also engage in research in which they critically analyze information for reliability and validity. Students vary their syntax, wording, and phraseology to create a dynamic and interesting experience for the reader. This allows them to be able to write whenever, and whatever, they may need when they complete high school and face their futures.

Chalk Talk: Debate Over Single-Gender Schools

Recent years have seen a resurgence of single-gender schools in the United States. Proponents of these schools maintain that it is easier for teachers to engage students in learning in a single gender environment. In fact, studies show that students in single gender schools perform significantly better on standardized tests than their peers. The benefits appear to be particularly pronounced for girls – in single gender schools their performance in math and science almost immediately improves. Detractors hold that single gender schools negatively impact kids’ social growth. Furthermore, opponents argue that single gender schools do not prepare boys or girls for the realities of life. Another way to achieve this is to have girls or boys courses within a traditional coeducational setting for certain courses or for students who might opt for that style of class.
