Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mentor District Curriculum

The English elementary curriculum involves a heavy emphasis on reading and writing, but also learning language arts, grammar, writing, composition, and spelling. Rhetorical analysis is emphasized in middle and high school. In the math curriculum, students are taught based on core standards such as being able to make sense of problems and solve them effectively, make use of structure, reason abstractly and quantitatively, and use appropriate tools.

High school courses include Art, Business/Computer Science, Career/Technical Education, English/Language Arts, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Studies, Technology, and World Languages. High school students must complete a balanced program of 21 credits in total to graduate. All students must take courses in economics and financial literacy in high school and must complete at least two semesters of Fine Arts unless they are following a career-technical path.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Cursive Writing

Today our society has been fortunate to have been immersed with abundant sources of technology and many resources like texting and typing. However, sometimes technical topics like grammar and even cursive writing or penmanship get placed on the back burner. Why is proper penmanship so important for not just adults but students? Fine penmanship is really a hallmark of a person's personality which communicates one's uniqueness and seal of approval. When a person demonstrates a skill such as fine cursive writing, not only is he or she able to obtain a passport, sign an employment application, but sign important documents and witness monumental events that may be either perceived by others a reflection of one's credibility and professionalism.
