Chalk Talk: Reading Benefits Students in Many Ways

Reading is a fundamental skill that all students should master as they make their way through public school. Reading engages students in learning the ins and outs of language, fostering the development of improved reading comprehension skills, improved vocabulary, and improved writing skills as well. The benefits of reading a lot don’t stop there. Students that read often also display improved concentration. Combined with improved reading and writing skills, this means that students who read on a regular basis also perform better in school. This improved performance is seen not just in language arts classes, but also across the board in all subjects. Reading is a great activity to calm children down as well. After recess or before bedtime, reading can serve to calm kids’ minds and get them focused on the task at hand. And since reading is an activity that requires active engagement, it is a great way for kids to exercise their brains, rather than sitting passively in front of a TV or a video game.
