Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Merrill District Curriculum

The Math curriculum provides students with a well-rounded basis in problem-solving in areas such as numerical operations, geometry, algebra and advanced math topics such as trigonometry and pre-calculus. Data analysis is also a significant part of the math curriculum and students learn how to interpret and represent data. Fractions are also a part of the curriculum. Students add and subtract fractions, as well as multiply and divide them. Learners also acquire an understanding of base ten, including how to perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers.

Merrill’s curriculum includes an introduction to financial literacy for high school students. Credit and debt management is a primary area of learning in the financial literacy curriculum. Students learn how to identify and evaluate various credit products and services, including credit cards and bank loans. The pitfalls of taking on too much credit are discussed, as are the resulting penalties if one is unable to stay current on their credit payments. Learners explore interest rates, fees, and various other charges that are incurred when credit is used in order to develop a clearer picture of the actual cost of utilizing credit for purchases.

Keeping Informed: Recent Merrill Educational News

  • Library Resources at PRMS - Students that attend Prairie River Middle School can access many library resources online. Information about available books, including new additions to the library, are available on the middle school website. Students can also learn the proper ways to reference resources in bibliographies and footnotes which is a skills they will use throughout their educational career.
  • Activities and Athletics at MMS - Parents and families that seek information about the extracurricular activities and sports offered at Merrill High School can access that information on the high school’s website. Information about upcoming events, the booster club, and community-based programs is available. Also, if a student is interested in starting a new club, they may speak with faculty or administrators about their ideas.
  • 1:1 iPad Initiative Expansion - The Board of Education for Merrill Area Public Schools recently voted to expand the district’s 1:1 technology initiative. As part of the expanded program, all students in kindergarten through the eighth grade will receive a district-issued iPad. This will be used in a variety of classes and students will have the chance to use many different functions of their iPad.
