Metairie District and Curriculum

The mission of Jefferson Parish Public Schools is to provide challenging, engaging and satisfying work for students. The schools use the Common Core Curriculum as a model for instruction in Math, Language Arts and other core subjects. The curriculum uses standards of learning at each grade level to clarify learning expectations and ensure students are progressing so they are fully prepared for post-high school life.

We currently cover the following Metairie-area school district: Jefferson Parish Public School System.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Metairie District Curriculum

Literacy skills are the foundation for all learning, which means students are taught how to read and understand various kinds of text, both visual and graphic. Writing to learn and inform helps students to share their learning and to be college and career ready by the end of high school. Research and presentation skills are also key components of the curriculum and add to the ways students have to express themselves in writing and speech.

At each grade level, math students learn numeracy, how to use mathematical operations, measurement, data, algebra and geometry. As students grow in knowledge and skill, the concepts they are expected to understand become more challenging. Students begin with computation, perform operations, and understand relationships and equations. Ultimately, students use those skills to solve real-world problems, both individually and in teams.

Chalk Talk: How to Prepare Your Child to Read!

Let your child see you read! In addition to reading with your child every day, let him or her see you read to yourself, in various situations. For instance, make sure your child sees you reading about your world, whether that is online, in a newspaper, or a magazine. Show and explain to your child why you are doing it, how you read, and why you chose that particular format (newspaper, internet, etc.) to read. When a child sees his or her family reading, the child makes a connection to reading and learning. You are your child’s first teacher, who guides his or her learning as your little one grows into an elementary student!
