Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Miami District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, the elementary students are taught the writing process. The students use each step of the writing process, beginning with the brainstorming step. This step is used with a choice of writing “webs” to help organize the thought process. Once the students come up with a topic, they use their web to take that topic and divide it into specific areas to write about. When this is finished, they move on to the rough draft, and the teacher assists the student in organizing the writing piece and editing for content, spelling, and mechanics. Once this step is complete, the student then writes the final draft.

In Math, the elementary students are taught the many areas of measurement. Measurement concepts of time, length, weight, volume, and temperature are explored using hands-on materials, such as rulers, scales, containers, and clocks. Students also learn the units that are used in measurement, such as the metric and US measuring systems.

Chalk Talk: Using a “Web” in the Writing Process

A “web” is a graphic organizer to help students outline their ideas for a writing essay. Graphic organizers can be charts, diagrams, or any other outline for the students to write down their prewriting in sections. These concept maps are used in the elementary grades to allow the students to see their thoughts and plan out their writing, and these writing webs make sure the students do not leave anything out of their essay. Many teachers utilize these in their teaching of the different steps of the writing process.
