Midland District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

In Midland, the curriculum that is used is the Ontario Curriculum which is a framework of the learning expectations in the subjects at all grade levels. The curriculum is a comprehensive guide to what students need to learn in the content areas on a basic level; it also details the concepts and advanced thinking skills that are gained through the basic learning. For instance, the Ontario Curriculum describes the individual skills that students need to develop in a course like Algebra and aligns these skills to higher order problem-solving skills. The curriculum is in place so that teaching and learning covers the breadth and depth of the subjects.

We currently cover the following Midland-area school districts: Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Midland District Curriculum

To boost students’ ability to read at grade level, group reading exercises are a central component of the curriculum. Students also use their texts as a source of reflection in their written analysis. Students work on a more formal style of writing for these kinds of assignments, and utilize words and phrases that link ideas together and clarify the relationship between ideas. Students also acquire the ability to identify and acknowledge opposing claims and integrate those into their writing.

The curriculum for Social Studies includes a look at government. Learners explore the various social and political responsibilities bestowed upon citizens of our nation. Students also learn about the interconnectedness of the global economy, identifying the ways in which growth or decline in one part of the world impacts economies in other parts of the world. To gain perspective about income, students participate in an examination of wages, benefits, taxes, and other aspects of one’s income.

Chalk Talk: High School World Languages Curriculum

In high school, world languages students participate in complex interpersonal conversations, working on acquiring the ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Students work on developing command of proper word usage and pronunciation while also developing insight into culturally appropriate tone, intonation, and use of nonverbal communication. Students also take part in presentations to large groups to enhance their speaking abilities in their newly acquired language. On the presentational level, students work on delivering information in verbal and written form to groups of people. This might take the form of delivering instructions for completing a task or sharing a viewpoint with others on a topic of interest. The interpretive level requires students to derive meaning from messages by listening to spoken utterances or reading texts in their learned language. Students practice their interpretive skills by reading a variety of texts, including literature.
