Midvale District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Canyons School District is embarking on an ambitious retooling of its curriculum, in line with Utah Core Standards for education. These are derived from the Common Core, an evidence-based educational program which draws from the best research in educational practice to prepare students for college educations and careers. Literacy skills are taught beginning in kindergarten, with the goal being that students can read to learn information by third grade, and will be able to understand literary and informational texts at increasing levels of difficulty each year, in addition to writing clearly and analytically about them.

We currently cover the following Midvale-area school district: Canyons School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Midvale District Curriculum

All students in the district take a “college prep” math sequence in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, each of which has four clear goals that draw from skills in basic algebra, geometry, and statistics. These courses are available in both regular and honors varieties. Science courses follow the “integrated science” model, concentrating on scale in sixth grade, structure in seventh, and change in eighth. Students can begin their study of French, Spanish, German, or Chinese, which they are encouraged to continue.

Students at Hillcrest High School in Midvale and all schools in the Canyons School district have the option of earning a regular diploma, which meets state standards, or an advanced or honors diploma. An advanced diploma requires taking two credits of biology, physics, and/or chemistry, as well as two years of a foreign language; the Honors Diploma is for students taking the advanced diploma and scoring above a certain benchmark on the ACT.

Chalk Talk: School Experience Matters

What we learn in school is obviously important, but how much of that we learn depends on how we experience our learning environment. This means that students who feel valued, safe, and happy in their school settings will be better able to absorb the content that they are exposed to. School is also a primary location for students to learn non-academic skills, like cooperation, listening, and emotional awareness. If they are struggling to master basic academic skills, they won’t be able to learn these important other lessons as well. Make sure that your child is able to handle both the academic and social lessons of school by supporting them and checking in to make sure the school is a supportive environment.
