Moab District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Grand County School District uses Utah Core Standards to guide the instructional process for all students. These are derived from Common Core Standards, a national framework for learning in Math and Language Arts, and extended to other core subjects so that each subject is taught according to rigorous guidelines. The curriculum specifies the skills, knowledge and concepts students should master at each grade level.

We currently cover the following Moab-area school district: Grand County School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Moab District Curriculum

The Science curriculum places an emphasis on the process of scientific discovery. Beginning in elementary school, students learn how to investigate natural phenomenon, how to communicate their observations, and how to observe change. As students move along, they learn how to understand hypotheses, how to evaluate or validate them, and even how to design their own experiments. Another focus of the science curriculum is on technology, both in terms of how it changes society but also in terms of how to work with it.

The Math curriculum revolves around numeracy, algebra, geometry, data analysis (statistics or probabilities), and in advanced years trigonometry or pre-calculus. By middle school, students are beginning to work with geometric proofs and will apply that knowledge to more advanced work in that topic in high school. Many hands-on opportunities are available so that students can understand how the shapes or patterns they work are used in the real world and how to understand its practical application.

Chalk Talk: What Is Integrated Teaching?

Integrated teaching refers to bringing together more than one subject within a lesson or unit of study; the goal is to extend the relevancy of one topic to other areas of learning. Interdisciplinary courses, or units within a course - for instance studying how the census affects political decision-making in either a social studies or math class - ties together the relevancy of statistics and math with government issues. This can be a great help to students as they consider their career options and want to see how different areas of knowledge interrelate and how they can maximize that in their future careers.
