Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monmouth District Curriculum

The science curriculum at Monmouth Schools allows students to explore their world through several projects that helps students further their education in the scientific field. In the younger children, nature walks and field trips help students realize that the everyday things that they see in the world around them are filled with science. As they go into middle and high school, students have visitors from the Evergreen Aviation Museum that talk with them about space rocks and geology beyond earth.

Students at Monmouth Schools are introduced to mathematics from the first day of kindergarten. These young students learn how to recognize and write their numbers. These students soon learn, not only how to add and subtract, but how to deconstruct numbers, so they look at them from many different angles. Soon multiplication and division enters their lives and then they learn how to use numbers in algebraic equations, or to find the volume of a geometric shape.

Chalk Talk: Classroom Tech Trends

Technology is a large part of a child’s life, including their school time. In recent years, some technology has been welcomed, while other is not encouraged. Cell phones have been banned in many classrooms as they can go from being a distraction, to being a tool for cheating. However, today, with all the apps that are available for phones, they can be used as additional tools. Social networking has also found its usefulness in education. Many educators use blogs or Twitter to send out assignments or to send links to helpful sites. Many other forms of technology are included in many classrooms today, including e-readers, i-pads and more. These tools can help each student be prepared for the ever-changing technological world that awaits them.
