Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Monona District Curriculum

Monona’s K-12 world languages curriculum is designed such that students in high school have the foundational skills in place in order to take on advanced studies in a non-dominant language. Advanced students take part in complex speaking exercises that test their ability to form grammatically correct utterances. Oral presentations given by students in a non-dominant language demonstrate deep knowledge of grammar, pronunciation, and cultural awareness. Learners additionally hone their speaking and writing skills by drafting and delivering speeches in the language under study.

Middle school students in Monona have the opportunity to explore the theatre arts. This curriculum focuses in part on research and analysis of acting. Learners view different kinds of acting performances, such as those from television, movies, and theatre, and analyze the differences in the method by which actors deliver their craft. Likewise, students explore the similarities found between different types of acting, including that which is performed live and that which is pre-recorded. Students also analyze important theatrical works, citing the cultural and historical significance of each.

Chalk Talk: Sports and Academics Go Hand in Hand

Students in sports benefit from the physical fitness, team building, and communication skills that result from participation in athletic events. But student-athletes reap many other benefits, including those that promote improved performance in the classroom. Student-athletes learn how to manage their time wisely because of the responsibilities placed on them from school, athletics, home, and work. Having the ability to prioritize tasks and set goals are skills that can help students perform better in school, be that in math, social studies, or art. Likewise, athletes must be adept at dealing with adversity and disappointment. Much like a volleyball player has to move on and forget the serve she missed, so too must she move on and forget the silly mistake she made on her math test. Additionally, sports teach kids to have fun, which is something they should do in the classroom as well. Working hard toward a goal, whether it is academic or athletic in nature, does not have to occur without smiles and laughter.
