Chalk Talk: Social Studies Provides Perspective

An integral part of education, social studies courses provide students with many valuable skills and benefits that will last a lifetime. Students in history learn how to critically analyze documents, which helps them assess meaning and intent. Students in geography learn how to read maps and develop improved spatial skills. In government, students learn valuable civics skills, including the need for participation in government through voting and supporting events and organizations that improve the community in which they live. All of these skills last a lifetime and promote an improved society. Additionally, social studies offers students perspective with regard to how our nation has developed and where we are headed in the future. By studying other peoples, cultures, and religions, students also gain an appreciation for diversity and respect for those unlike themselves.
