Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Montevallo District Curriculum

Literacy and numeracy are of critical focus as the base of foundational knowledge that students will gain. In the English and Math classes during the early years, students have the opportunity to work with the fundamental concepts, read different types of texts, solve different types of problems, and in doing so become prepared for their future coursework in all subject areas.

Being within the Shelby County School System, the community of Montevallo is a close knit community that takes pride in the schools. Montevallo schools uses technology to involve the students in learning in all subjects. In the core subjects, and the electives as well, technology is used in the following ways: website learning, Smartboards, projectors, educational videos, iPads, iPods, laptop computers, and electronic reading devices. In this age of technology, funding is provided for various technology equipment to be used within the classrooms.

Keeping Informed: Recent Montevallo Educational News

  • American Village - American Village is an education center for the history of America, and over 34,000 students come to learn all about civics and history annually. Children from the state of Alabama and other states in the Southeast take advantage of the education they can receive here. Students and teachers can step back in time and enjoy the programs and drama in The American Village of Alabama.
  • Picture This! - The students of Montevallo Elementary have created metal sculptures and have used these to bring life to the school campus! Throughout the school, the sculptures decorate the learning environment and bring a cheerful feel for the students and staff. These artworks are creatively done by students of all ages at this elementary school!
  • Summer Reading Program - Students are encouraged to read during the summer at Montevallo Middle School. To help make the choice easier for students in grades 6-8, there is a list of suggested novels for the children to enjoy. There are also recommendations for students that are in the gifted program and for the rising seventh graders.

Many self-contained classrooms are heterogeneously grouped. This means that the students that are placed in specific teachers' classrooms are not ability grouped in any way.
