Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Montpelier District Curriculum

Montpelier Public Schools establishes learning expectations for writing, literacy, science, and other subjects based on grade level. At elementary level, the goal is to build a strong foundation for future academic learning. Students are taught to use the library, basic math operations, and the foundations of literacy. In the middle school, the learning community is organized into teams that support the students in learning interesting world content.

Art and the human spirit are not left out of the curriculum in the Montpelier school district. The Crafters Edge and Dinner Theater curricula both use art forms as a medium to teach students to appreciate and express individuality, generate ideas, and use the foundational mathematics, science, and social studies skills to design and implement products that meet a need that has been identified in the community. Students collaborate on real issues that impact the community, allowing and encouraging creative expression and problem solving.

Chalk Talk: Making Time for Study Time

If you have ever come home from school and planned to start your homework after an hour of relaxing only to find yourself hours later with nothing done, you are not alone! Once you have begun watching television or playing videogames, it is incredibly easy to lose track of time. To make sure that you complete your homework for the next day, it is better to schedule a specific time each day to focus on your studies. Some find it easiest to simply complete homework as soon as they arrive at their home, perhaps after having a healthy snack. Others who benefit more from a little relaxation first or a brief nap may want to set a time a little later in the evening. To make sure that time doesn’t get away from you, set a reminder in your cellphone or ask a reliable family member to let you know when it is time to study.
