Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Moorestown Township District Curriculum

The district has developed a comprehensive K-12 curriculum that provides students with the knowledge, skills and tools they will need in order to be successful in all aspects of their post-secondary lives. Although the district’s curriculum is highly challenging, it also respects the fact that each student is different and so offers opportunities for students to show proficiency on state standards.

The math curriculum includes a measurement and data strand. As part of this strand, elementary students gain basic measurement skills, including the ability to tell and measure time, organize objects by height and width, and determine an object’s volume. In middle school, the focus shifts to interpretation of data. Students develop an understanding of statistical variability, including the characteristics of a distribution and how to describe distributions. High schoolers learn about different methods to describe data, including the use of mean, median and mode, and how to interpret the slope and intercept of a linear model.

Chalk Talk: Vocational Education Is More Important Than Ever

The world has become increasingly technological over the course of the last two decades. Yet, despite being in the second decade of the 21st Century, the American workforce still has a severe shortage of skilled workers in career areas that have seen steady growth. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of skills needed to compete in today’s global market are those acquired in vocational and career classes. To address this problem, many school districts are putting extra time, effort and funding into developing cutting-edge school-to-work programs that pair vocational and career education with internships, apprenticeships and job shadowing experiences. Students can learn valuable knowledge and skills in the classroom and apply that learning to actual work environments. In so doing, students are prepared to make positive contributions to the workforce almost immediately upon graduation.
