Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Morrilton District Curriculum

The district uses the Common Core Standards for Language Arts and Math. Morrilton Elementary School posts the literacy and math curricula for each unit or module for second and third grade. MES also sends home a monthly newsletter that shows what students are learning in both content areas in conjunction with Common Core. For example, in October, second graders were reading various types and genres of texts—as emphasized in the new standards—about the Wild West, including chapter books, fairytales, informational stories, and song lyrics.

Other core subjects such as Science, Social Studies, World Languages and the Arts are also taught according to detailed frameworks developed by subject-area specialists and educators in collaboration to provide students with standards that are educationally-sound and look toward post-secondary goals to ensure that students have a comprehensive and well-rounded education. In high school, students are also able to conduct independent studies which can combine subject areas in an interdisciplinary approach.

Chalk Talk: Diagnosing Reading Difficulties

Parents and teachers can usually identify early on when their children struggle with reading. To truly help these students improve, they need to know specifically which areas of reading students struggle with so that the appropriate interventions can be put in place. Although students are already tested more often than they probably should be, reading diagnostic assessments are important in determining students’ problem areas in reading. There are many different assessments available, and they test areas such as comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and phonemic awareness. Several of them assess two or three of these aspects of reading. There are great variances in the assessments; some take just a few minutes to administer, while others can take an hour or more. The assessments are typically customizable based on student’s grade level and actual reading ability. Scores on a combination of tests can provide the very important actual reading level of the student (for example, if the score is 1.4, the student is reading at a middle-of-first-grade level).
