Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Morris District Curriculum

A major part of Morris’ health sciences curriculum is teaching children healthy ways of communicating with others. Learners identify healthy and unhealthy ways to express their emotions, and learn essential conflict resolution skills as well. Students brainstorm ways to be thoughtful of others’ feelings, learning how to empathize with others and validate their feelings. Showing care and consideration for others is also emphasized. Students learn how to take ownership of their behavior and actions as an important part of the curriculum is teaching responsibility.

Citizenship and government are two essential components of the middle school social studies curriculum in Morris. Students identify different levels of government, such as local, state, and federal, and outline their basic functions. Learners also explore the process by which laws are proposed, created, and implemented by various levels of government. The manner in which government is funded, such as through taxes, is examined as well. Students identify the various types of taxes that citizens must pay, and analyze how tax revenue is used to enhance services that benefit the community.

Chalk Talk: What Parents Should Expect in Kindergarten

Sending your child to school can be a stressful time for you and your child both. But kindergarten is designed to be incredibly supportive of your child so he or she can make the transition from preschool into public school. Much of kindergarten focuses on building essential skills, such as speaking and listening, sharing, social and emotional skills, and of course academic skills. The vehicle by which these skills are developed is typically through some form of play – games to learn academic skills, cooperative play to learn how to share, and so forth. There are a lot of hands-on activities as well, so children stay engaged and focused on learning. By making kindergarten a fun, supportive, and active atmosphere, your child’s teacher will help prepare your child to continue their education throughout elementary, middle, and high school.
