Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Morristown District Curriculum

Hamblen County Schools have adopted the Common Core Standards, and have made reaching these standards more accessible to staff and students. Their interactive curriculum guides for each grade level and each subject area make it easier to find activities and strategies for teaching the content. They are using materials and strategies that support the rigorous and critical thinking that are the focus of the Common Core Standards.

The schools offer many innovative paths for students to explore, including a variety of career-readiness classes in automotive technology, criminal justice, cosmetology, trades in the building field and many others. The choices their students make about their classes have a real impact on who the students are trying to become. The Jump Start to Educational Excellence program has made preschool accessible within the public school system, and this has been shown to improve readiness for kindergarten and high-level learning and brain development.

  • SCORE Prize - Dramatic improvement in student achievement is celebrated in Hanblen County Schools, winner of the 2012 SCORE Prize. Three schools and Hamblen County School district were recognized by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) for their achievements. The director of schools called the award an honor for the school district and the community. Recognizing schools and districts who are able to turn around student achievement gives value to this effort within the community and the state, while giving hope to other schools who have struggled. Congratulations to the students, teachers, administration, parents and families, and the community!
  • National Blue Ribbon School - John Hay Elementary School is one of six schools in Tennessee to earn the Blue Ribbon status. The school will be honored, among others, in Washington, D.C. in November for their gains in student performance on state assessments. This award is given to schools that either have exemplary high student performance, or that show exemplary improvement. Awards and recognition like this supports teachers and students in their mission to give and receive excellent learning opportunities to enrich student achievement. Students, teachers, schools and districts thrive with recognition of a job done well, and this leads to continuous quality improvement and a desire to achieve more.
  • District Painted Pink - Staff and students participated in the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure event, wearing pink for $5 in support of a cure for cancer and all those affected by it. The Hamblen County School District raised a significant amount of donations for the cause, and showed community spirit through it all. The principal of one of the schools lost a wager with the students through the event, getting his head shaved and painted pink for the cure! These are experiences that the students won’t forget, with so many people coming together for an important event.

Chalk Talk: How to Improve Your Child’s Spelling

When you break words up into syllables, it makes it easier for children to decode (sound the words out to read.) It also makes it easier for your child to encode (sound the words out to write.) When children get into the habit of breaking words apart properly, they start to understand through repetition of spelling rules how our language is formed and why. This deeper sense of sounds and word structure helps them to crack the code, as it relates to their spelling, reading and writing (which are all related skills.) When you are helping your child study for spelling tests, have your child draw a vertical line to separate syllables, just like in the dictionary. This simple step can make a world of difference in the process and in the outcome!
