Chalk Talk: How to Reinforce Basic Number and Letter Skills

Have you ever been in line at the DMV (or some other horribly nasty place)? With your child(ren)? For a long time? You may notice that they begin to get bored, act out, or even stop listening. There is a solution to not only fight the boredom, but to reinforce some basic skills at the same time. Kids love to explore their surroundings. By asking them to locate certain items around the area you are in, children will have fun while keeping busy. 1) How many letter “x” can you find? Using letters in a child’s name works well. 2) How many number “x” can you find? Again, relate the number to the child, such as his or her age. 3) Are there more red picture or green pictures on this wall? 4) How many “shapes” are in this room? Try using a child’s favorite color. 5) How many posters do you see on these two walls? There are any number of variations to this seek and find game. It can last as long or as short as you need it to, and it might just keep you sane long enough to get that license renewed.
