Mulvane District and Curriculum

Mulvane Unified School District is based on the educational standards set by the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards Curriculum. The curriculum allows the school to create materials and lessons which help students to grow in knowledge and productivity. Subject-area knowledge is built each year based on major themes in a subject, such as focusing on the Life Sciences and making the learning increasingly complex each year. This helps students build on prior knowledge, which accesses a type of reflective thinking that assists in their analytic understanding. Achieving this level of understanding is built into all subject area frameworks.

We currently cover the following Mulvane-area school district: Mulvane Unified School District 263.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Mulvane District Curriculum

The English Language Arts & Literacy curriculum focuses on the development of critical reading, analytic writing, broad vocabulary, and ability to use the language properly and effectively. The reading objectives include the ability to read closely, recognize theme or intent, look for supporting details and literary techniques, and being able to discuss and write about what has been read. The writing curriculum emphasizes analytic writing that uses evidence to support the point that the student is trying to make.

The Math curriculum moves students toward the ability to do advanced problem-solving operations in a number of topics including Number and Quantity, Algebra, Geometry, Functions, Modeling, and Statistics and Probability. Modeling involves using quantitative data to make decisions. Students learn how to represent data on graphs and charts, and how to tackle broad problems – like the distribution of resources to a city – through the use of mathematical models. By doing this, they recognize the applications for math in everyday life.

Chalk Talk: Gap Years for Students Interested in the Environment

There has been evidence that some students do better in college if they take a year off between high school and college. This is called a gap year. Students that enjoy nature can spend a year with the Student Conservation Association. Within this year the student can travel to different states and national parks. Here they learn to be a member of an Exotic Plant Management Team, or give tours of Native American archaeology sites, or to monitor endangered birds and so much more. The SCA provide housing, health insurance and travel expenses, a living allowance and an education award when their year is up. This is a great way for students to gain experience during this gap year.
